Committees & Issues

I. Committee on Security and Defence (Ferre Windey)

The question of security strategy in the EU. Neighbouring countries have seen changes in their political systems causing concern to the EU member states. To what extent should the EU develop coordinated strategies for dealing with these changes in potentially hostile states?

II. Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (Camil de Schutter)

The question of city versus country. All kinds of city-agriculture pop up, ranging from “guerilla gardening” in the city to government initiatives as people’s gardens and community gardens. At this moment agriculture is looking for new systems of “city agriculture” – How can these new developments in agriculture be addressed?

III. Committee on Industry Research and Energy (Felix Vieg)

The question of energy efficiency. As part of the European Commission’s roadmap towards a low-carbon economy, how realistic is it to reduce EU emissions in the near future?
Are green energy alternatives to gas and oil imports a successful way towards this goal?

IV. Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (Anne S. Tetens)

The question of increasing skepticism and nationalist tendencies in EU member states.
What can be done to bring Europe closer to its citizens and reinvigorate commitment to a closer union? Is more or less flexibility for member states required?

V. Committee on Culture and Education (Rasa M. Juras tbc)

The question of educating young people to become global citizens. The EU is trying to raise the quality of all levels of education e.g. in its strategy for 2020: Youth on the Move. How can this strategy be integrated into the national policies of education?

VI. Committee on Human Rights (Diana Oidingu)

The question of issues concerning human rights, the protection of minorities and the promotion of democractic values. Are human rights universal rights? In what way can the values endorsed by the EU be extended to other parts of the world?
